Choosing the best gear as a female player

Choosing the right gear can feel SO overwhelming, especially as a woman. I have used.

I have used a combination of different brands over the years, but always find myself coming back to Bauer.

They have a dedicated women’s line, and their quality is unmatched.

(I have had some of my pieces for over 20 years now!!) and they still have lots of life left in them!

That’s why I recommend spending a bit more to get the good stuff right off the bat.

Here’s what I recommend.

Hockey Gear Buying Guide

What to Consider Before Buying Hockey Gear

Choosing equipment doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with fit, safety, playing needs, and your budget rather than focusing on the most expensive options.

01

Get the Right Fit

Equipment should fit the player properly and be suitable for their age, size, and level of play. Poorly fitting protective gear may leave areas exposed or restrict movement.

02

Prioritize Protection

Choose certified protective equipment appropriate for the player’s league and local requirements. Check helmets and other protective items for damage, wear, and correct fit.

03

Consider Playing Level

Beginners may have different equipment needs from experienced players. Ask a qualified coach or knowledgeable hockey equipment fitter for advice if you’re unsure.

Keep Your Gear Fresh & Ready

Simple Habits for Better Equipment Care

A little care after every session helps keep equipment ready for the next practice.

  • Air out your gear: Remove equipment from your bag after use and allow it to dry in a well-ventilated area.

  • Follow care instructions: Clean items according to their labels and the manufacturer’s recommendations.

  • Check for damage: Look for cracked shells, damaged straps, loose fasteners, worn padding, and other signs of wear.

  • Care for skate blades: Dry blades after use and store skates safely with suitable blade covers when appropriate.

  • Keep your bag clean: Empty out damp clothing, remove debris, and clean the bag regularly.

  • Know when to replace items: Replace damaged or poorly fitting protective equipment instead of relying on temporary fixes.
